Used Airboat Inspection: What Patriot Checks Before a Boat Leaves the Shop
Updated September 30, 2026. Vidor, Texas.
Every boat that leaves Patriot gets the same final check sheet, new or used, Patriot or another brand. The crew torques the hardware, checks the hull, drive, engine, electrical and controls, then fixes and rechecks anything they find. New Patriots are also water tested before they ship.

What does Patriot check before a boat leaves the shop?
Eight areas, in the same order on every boat. Bryant Floyd, Patriot’s lead tester and inspector, is the last set of eyes. Airboats shake themselves loose, so the sheet focuses on hardware and the drive.
| # | Area | What gets checked |
|---|---|---|
| 01 | Fasteners | Engine mounts, cage, prop hub and rudder fittings torqued |
| 02 | Hull and poly | Welds, the bottom and poly adhesion |
| 03 | Exhaust | Clamps, tubing and mounts tight, no leaks |
| 04 | Drive | Belts, gearbox and bearings inspected and lubed |
| 05 | Fluids | Oil, fuel filters and coolant, no leaks |
| 06 | Electrical | Batteries, wiring, gauges and charging |
| 07 | Prop and controls | Blades, rudders and linkage |
| 08 | Final check | Anything found is fixed, then checked again |

A traded-in AirRanger gets the same sheet as a new Patriot. Patriot does not inspect boats it is not selling, but the inspection is free when you consign or trade in.

How do you check an airboat hull and poly?
Check the welds and seams, then get under the boat. Cracks start at seams, the engine stand and the seat stands. Water in the hull after a run means a leak.
What is airboat poly?
A UHMW plastic sheet fastened over the bottom so the hull slides over grass, mud and shell. Look for spots worn through, lifting edges and missing fasteners. Patriot’s used listings show each boat’s poly coat.
Does salt water corrode an airboat?
Yes. Brackish water around Sabine Lake speeds up corrosion where stainless fasteners meet aluminum. Look for white, chalky pitting and rinse after salt runs.

What should you check on the engine and drive?
Look for leaks, listen for noise and ask for service records. Hours mean little without records. The value guide covers engine hours and leak-down tests.
| Part | Warning signs |
|---|---|
| Gearbox | Whine that changes with RPM, oil under the drive, metal flecks in the gear oil |
| Belts | Cracks, glazed edges, a squeal or burning smell under load |
| Exhaust | Loose clamps, cracked flex tube, soot at a joint |
| Cooling | Grass packed in the radiator, low coolant, a climbing temp gauge |
| Fuel | Wet lines or any fuel smell. Do not start it. |
Engine too far gone? Patriot repowers any make.
How do you inspect the prop, cage and rudders?
Run a hand along each blade for nicks and cracks, then check the hub bolts. A blade that lets go at speed throws pieces.
The cage needs solid welds and nothing near the prop. Most vibration comes from a damaged or out-of-track prop. The stick should move the rudders smoothly with no binding.

Does Patriot water test every airboat?
Every new Patriot is water tested before it ships. Used boats are inspected on the check sheet. Buying privately? Ask the seller to run the boat with you aboard and watch the gauges.
Dealer or private sale?
A private sale can cost less, but the inspection becomes your job.
| Patriot’s used lot | Private sale | |
|---|---|---|
| Inspection | Final check sheet | What you check yourself |
| Repairs | Fixed and rechecked | As-is |
| Paperwork | Bill of sale and titles included | You confirm title and liens |
| Holding a boat | $5,000 deposit, applied to the price | Up to the seller |
| Delivery | Any state | You haul it |
Insurers and lenders may require a marine survey on a used boat (Progressive). If so, hire a SAMS or NAMS surveyor who has worked on airboats.
What paperwork does a used airboat need in Texas?
The original title signed over to you and a signed bill of sale. TPWD says not to buy a used boat without both.
- The HIN on the boat matches the title.
- Any lien is released before you pay.
- Pay the 6.25% boat and motor tax within 45 working days of the sale (TPWD, as of September 2026).
- Title the trailer at your county tax office.
Patriot’s used boats leave with a bill of sale and titles for the boat, motor and trailer, where each applies.
What should you check before starting an airboat?
- Oil, coolant and fuel levels, and no fresh drips.
- Hoses and clamps tight.
- Blades clean and hub bolts tight.
- Nothing loose on deck or near the cage.
- Stick and throttle move freely, and gauges come up.
Anything off goes to the Patriot service shop first. It works on any make.
Airboat inspection FAQ
Does Patriot inspect airboats from other builders?
Yes. Every used boat Patriot sells gets the same final check sheet as a new Patriot, whatever brand built it, including consignments and trade-ins.
Will Patriot inspect a boat I am buying from someone else?
No. Patriot only inspects boats it sells, consigns or takes in on trade. For a private sale, use the checklist on this page or hire a marine surveyor.
What is a pre-delivery inspection on a boat?
It is the last full check a builder or dealer runs before handing a boat over. At Patriot it is the final check sheet, plus a water test on new builds.
Where is the hull identification number on an airboat?
On the starboard side of the transom, within two inches of the top (33 CFR 181.29). It is 12 characters. Match it to the title before you buy.
