Open to the public
Not without permission
Louisiana dropped its posting requirement in 2003, so private water may have no sign. Check the Office of State Lands map before you leave a main channel. Navigability is a court call, and the reform bill HB 91 died in committee in 2024.
Registration, a working muffler, life jackets and a boater card for younger operators. Add a land permit to enter a WMA.

Open bays, private leases and the few public marsh units that allow airboats.
In Texas that means the named J.D. Murphree bayous, Keith Lake and the Bayside Marsh Unit of Matagorda Island WMA. Louisiana hunters run leases and public water. Patriot builds hunting and fishing airboats for both coasts.

Yes. Texas treats an airboat as a motorboat, so you can run one on public rivers, bays and lakes unless a local rule bans it, as the City of Houston does on Lake Houston. Wildlife management areas ban airboats except where TPWD lists an exception, such as the named bayous at J.D. Murphree WMA. Every motorboat in Texas needs a working muffler or water manifold.
Almost never. LDWF bans airboats on the lands it runs, wildlife management areas and state refuges included. The only listed exception is the designated trail system in Maurepas Swamp WMA, and its legal footing is disputed after a 2026 bill digest said the permission ended in 2019. Where the trails apply, they close September 1 to January 31 and cap engines at 351 cubic inches.
On the Texas and Louisiana coast, effectively no. Sabine, Lacassine and Big Branch Marsh refuges ban air-thrust boats outright. McFaddin and Texas Point allow only a single engine of 25 hp or less with a prop of 9 inches or less, and Jocelyn Nungaray (formerly Anahuac) bans airboat launching. Each refuge’s rule is listed in 50 CFR 26.34.
In Texas, yes if you were born on or after September 1, 1993, because nearly every airboat runs more than 15 horsepower. In Louisiana, yes if you were born after January 1, 1984 and the motor is over 10 horsepower. TPWD and LDWF both approve online courses, and the card covers airboats the same as any other motorboat.
No. Louisiana repealed its posting requirement in 2003, so a marsh pond or canal on private land may have no sign at all. Only navigable water and its bottom are public, and high water does not open private land. Check the State Land Office map of state-claimed water bodies, and get written permission before you run anything that is not on it.
No. Pass a Loutre falls under the general LDWF ban on airboats. Mud boats and air-cooled boats up to 36 total horsepower are allowed, and from September 1 to January 31 air-cooled engines are barred after 2 p.m. outside the named passes. Airboat owners heading to the Mississippi River delta need to stay on open public water outside the WMA.
